Parenting Strategies That You Need To Implement

by Silva Carvalho

Most parents are committed to raising their children in the best possible way, but there are always issues that can leave you confused about which approach to take. When it comes to discipline, for example, is it best to be strict, permissive or somewhere in between? Being a positive parent, and a good role model, is a possibility for you if you follow these guidelines.

Of all of the hundreds of studies that have been done, it has been shown that lack of involvement with your kids is the worst thing that you can do, even over being too strict or overly permissive.

When your children do a good job with something, don't hesitate to tell them. If you only notice it when your kids do something wrong, you're missing part of the picture. When you point something out, good or bad, you tend to reinforce it in the child's mind, so you don't want to overlook the positive. You want to bolster a child's self esteem as much as possible, and praise is the best way to do this. You don't have to exaggerate or make things up, but make sure you notice when your kids do something that's worthy of praise.

Parents can sometimes feel overwhelmed, and you shouldn't let yourself reach this point. Try to work things out with your partner so that responsibilities are shared as much as possible. If you're raising a child on your own, you always have some options for getting help when you need it. The best parents are those who recognize when they need help and learn how to ask for it. If you don't have a clear idea of who to call when you need help, make it a priority to build a support system for yourself. Needing help or advice doesn't mean you're not competent as a parent, only that you're human. Sometimes someone else can offer a fresh point of view and give you a useful suggestion.

Bad choices can be averted by providing two or more good choices that the child can select from and make the situation better. This type of scenario allows you to avoid angry talk, and allows your child to make a good decision with you being in full control every step of the way. As you begin to raise your child, you will notice personality differences and you will learn how to interact with each other everyday. A balance of self-control and discipline is necessary in your relationship with your children. In the end, every parenting skill must be modified to some degree because each child is different.
