Parents looking to find a baby monitor may be in for a surprise when they find out that it's not as easy as it used to be to choose. A decade ago, you may have only found a monitor which could only do a few things, but now you can practically find one which will practically do everything, just short of changing your baby's diaper for you! However, whether or not you want all the gadgets or simply want an easy-to-use baby monitor, all you have to do is consider these tips to help you choose the right monitor.

Be sure to find a monitor that allows you control over your receiver's volume. Of course you'll want to hear any sound of distress, but try to find a monitor that allows you to adjust volume to a comfortable level. You don't want to be rocket launched out of your bed during your first full night of sleep because your receiver makes it sound like a bomb has gone off every time your baby rustles his blanket a little bit or sighs. Naturally you would appreciate a system with a reasonable amount of volume control for comfort.

How much battery life do you need? Consider the kind of battery life that is required for your family. You can even find systems which have the option to be plugged into an outlet and charged overnight, so that they do not run out of battery life, while other systems may use a charging station to be recharged, and of course there is the regular self-change battery system, but it all depends on what you need, so consider the battery life carefully.

Since you cannot fully prevent external noises from occurring around you at times, a visual monitor at least warns or alerts you if anything is happening, so that you don't have worry about not being able to hear your baby if something happens because of other things going on around you. If one or both parents are hearing impaired, this is also a good system, and even if both parents can hear fine, because it still alerts you when something is wrong, and will let you know even if you cannot hear it.

It's always good to ask yourself questions when you are trying to buy a baby monitor, because the extensiveness, strength, and even size are all important factors which need to be taken into consideration before choosing a system. If you are planning on having more children, and even if you are not, you should also consider the lifetime expectancy and warranty of your monitor, as well as the price and weigh out all of your options. The best monitor, in the end, is one which will work for your entire household so that everyone can get the best out of it, especially you and your baby!
